The follow up call to a journalist is often the most dreaded action any business owner has when getting publicity in the media, but it’s the most important.
Journalists are always on deadline and their inbox is full of media releases so it’s important you call and speak to them, usually 24 hours after sending that email.
You want to check firstly if they received your media release and if they didn’t have it there to send immediately and talk to them about your story.
Many journalists might not respond to your media release because their inbox is swamped and they don’t see it or they do like the story but simply got distracted.
If they run that particular story that’s awesome but if it’s not for them then talk to them about what stories they are interested in as it might just lead to publicity for you anyway.
And if you can’t get the journalist on the phone because it goes to voicemail or just rings out then keep trying and don’t give up because your efforts will pay off.
